Disaster warning from Civil Defence

If a major natural disaster hits the Western Bay of Plenty, residents may need to look after themselves for at least three days.
That is the stark warning from Western Bay of Plenty Civil Defence manager Alan Pearce.

Alan Pearce is urging everyone to review their emergency planning for a natural disaster.

He says residents need to have enough supplies to look after themselves and their families for at least three days, but is recommending enough for seven days.
'I don't think our community are as prepared as they could be.”
Alan believes many residents think Civil Defence, emergency services and government agencies will offer immediate assistance after a natural disaster.
Inaccessible roads, collapsed bridges or unsafe conditions could make it difficult to get assistance through.
Western Bay of Plenty Civil Defence wants residents to remember three key survival tips: have alternative communication – either a battery powered radio, or transistor; have sufficient drinkable water – three litres per person per day; and have enough food to last three days.
'Civil Defence may not be able to immediately render assistance to all the population that is affected.
'The reality is that if we are not prepared we will suffer a greater loss.”
