Fitting cars for road safety

A new driving programme is set to help older drivers ensure their cars are ergonomically friendly and easier to use.
The CarFit programme is based on an American model, created by the American Society of Aging and developed in collaboration with the American Automobile Association.

The programme is being introduced in New Zealand through the AANZ Driver Education foundation. There are only 23 other organisations in the lower North Island that have taken up this new programme.
The programme is a personalised 12 point check to generally check the driver's vehicles, ensuring they can drive safely and well. It involves checking seat position, safety belt position, that drivers can get out of the door easily, and visibility. The service takes 15-20 minutes to complete.
Twelve technicians were trained on Tuesday, completing a checklist and understanding what to look for in driver's vehicles. Technicians were taken through a morning seminar, followed by a practical session in the afternoon.
Tauranga and Western Bay of Plenty road safety coordinator Lynette Hines says the next step is making people aware of the free service.
Tauranga Age Concern will be taking over the administration of the programme, offering the service free to groups of older drivers from retirement villages and community events.
