Simple solution to pesky problem

A Whangamata local has come up with a brilliant solution for keeping those pesky seagulls out of your rubbish bags.

Appalled by the mess and tired of picking up rubbish strewn over the road and footpaths by seagulls, Anna Fryer decided enough was enough – so she invented the ‘Gullinator.

This simple invention is made from sturdy plastic mesh, a hoop and drawstring top, and provides a cost-effective solution to gulls pecking at blue bags on collection day.

Anna knew permanent residents were also tired of having to clean up after seagulls struck and she decided complaints were not of much help.

'In the Gullinator there is now an effective alternative that will win you points with your neighbours, and with the guys collecting the bags,” she says.

Anna's invention has been product tested and modified by Thames-Coromandel District Council's Solid Waste officer Bryce Louden.

The Gullinator costs $15 and is available from council's service centres across the Coromandel.
