People returning to the Bay of Plenty and Coromandel on State Highway 2 are being warned to expect delays.

A serious crash has closed SH2, just east of the intersection with SH1, Bombay, says police.

'Traffic diversions are in place along Koheroa Road and Island Block Roads," says police.

'Heavy motor vehicles must use Island Block Road or other suitable routes.”

Motorists are being warned to delay their journeys if possible or use alternative routes away from the scene.

A Tauranga resident is caught up in the delays as she heads home to the Bay.

She sent in photos to SunLive via Facebook to show traffic lined up on the side of the motorway.

Police are working to clear the scene and have the road re-opened as soon as possible.
