Door surfers busted on highway

The antics of two drunk men door surfing on State Highway 1 is being described as 'ridiculous” and 'expensive” by police.

Huntly road safety team Sergeant Neil Mansill says two drivers got quite a surprise as they went to ring * 555 to report the behaviour and found a patrol car already pulling the offenders over.

'As is to be expected, we have a number of extra staff out and about on the roads and while other drivers were doing the right thing alerting us to the problem, one of our officers had already noticed there was a problem.

'Two male passengers in a southbound Lexus heading from Pukekohe to the Waikato to celebrate New Year's Eve had started drinking early and were sitting outside of the car on the windowsilld, facing each other as they drank their beers over the car roof and gestured to other motorists in a 70km/h stretch of road works at Rangiriri.”

Neil says the woman driving the car told police the pair wouldn't listen to her and get back in until the long arm of the law reached out to tap them on the shoulder.

Both men received a $150 fine.

'But those fines could have been the least of their worries. You know, their behaviour at this time of year is pretty selfish,” says Neil.

'While police are paid to be out on the roads at this time, this part of the Waikato is serviced by volunteer ambulance and fire crews and these dedicated people have to give up their precious family time to deal with this type of idiotic behaviour. I think when these two lads sober up they might want to spare a thought for the potential consequences.”

Neil says while the two men's behaviour was at the far end of the scale, the majority of motorists have been well behaved.

'Traffic flows coming out of Auckland and into the Waikato have been very heavy and colleagues across the District are reporting big numbers of vehicles heading towards the Coromandel and Raglan.

'Our message is to watch your speed, your following distance and keep within your lane and that way we'll all reach the beach in one piece, after all road safety is everyone's responsibility.”

Its nothing to be proud of but in mid 60s we use to stand on the runnong boards and have fun, it is a bit PC now they are just like us having fun, im sure there are police officers that have done silly things in their lives and now punish people for what they use to do,GOSH aslong as nobody was hurt,i know its a bit silly but hey we were all young once, just give them a warning, we have all been there, thats all i have to say

in a nutshell why NZ drivers are what they are. Doesn't seem to matter that their "silly" behavior could cause the deaths of other innocent road users. Ot's just a bit of fun? NOT!

Er, no, we have not "all been there". They were breaking the law, they got fined. Well done to the police.
