SunLive Summer BBQ Playlist, Vol 3

Well friends, like a great summer holiday that comes and goes in the blink of an eye - all things must come to an end.

So for Volume Three of the SunLive Summer BBQ Playlist I'm being completely self-indulgent and dedicating it entirely to this hack journo's favourite tunes to burn sausages to.

The Kinks –Sunny Afternoon This is one of them songs I just want sing/scream at the top of my lungs. The lyrics are some of the finest penned in history, with examples like: 'And I love to live so pleasantly, Live this life of luxury, Lazing on a sunny afternoon, In the summertime…” And it's swaggery beat always leaves me grinning from ear to ear. Many a happy memory singing this song under an afternoon sun.

Deftones – Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away) As soon as I hear the opening guitar riff to this song my head starts nodding from side-to-side and I start making ‘wah-wah' noises with my mouth. I particularly love the contrasts in Chino's voice in this song and his lyrics are absolutely beautiful. And sure, I'll admit it, when it comes on the stereo and I'm behind the barbecue, steak will go flying through the air while I'm indulging in a mospit consisting of me, myself and I.

Darcy Clay – Jesus I Was Evil No explanation I can offer for this song will convey how much I love it. Many wonderful and hilarious high school memories flood my brain as soon as I hear that 'I used to do lots of things” followed by that heavily distorted guitar. RIP Darcy Clay.

The Zombies – Time of the Season Love this song, such a swinging snapshot of and window into a golden era of songwriting. Love the lyrics, the multiple voices (perfect for group singing), and just the overall vibe of the song. Plus, there's a mean falsetto part in the chorus and whenever I hit that note it's this weird quasi-religious experience that makes me feel like I'm a member of some hippy flower power church choir.

Blind Melon – Change I've sung this song with my mates under the summer sun so many times that I've lost count. It's just a beautiful piece of songwriting, and no matter how crap the day has been, the lyrics coupled with Shannon Hoon's voice will always raise my spirits, along with a beer.

Joy Division – Transmission If this song doesn't get you up on your feet and floundering about like a man or woman possessed, then I seriously don't know what will. Once the ‘nothing flashy but kick you in the backside' bassline and disco-esque drumbeat kicks off the song, I'll start bouncing around the room like a clown on a pogo stick.

Voom – King Kong When I first heard this song back in high school, I remember several weeks of walking around quietly muttering ‘shoo shoo' to myself as the song drifted through my head. With a beat you can set your watch to, lyrics you don't need a pHD to understand and just an all-round good vibe feel to it, this tune's been one of my go-to summer tracks for years and years.

Queens of the Stone Age – Feel Good Hit Of The Summer No explanation needed for this song – it's exactly as the title suggest.

Morphine – Super Sex I'm never able to sit still when this song cranks up. That beat with the wailing saxophones, a two-string bass played with a glass slide, and Mark Sandman's vocals with its effortless cool. Every time I hear 'Super Sex', I just think it's the perfect song to compliment a dram, couple of mates talking bollocks, and the sun sinking down below the horizon.

The Doors – The Soft Parade I've been a fanatical Doors fan ever since primary school and ‘The Soft Parade' is my absolute favourite song. Ever. It doesn't matter where I am – at work, in the car, on the beach, in the toilet – once it starts my life will be put on hold for the next 8m 36s. It's so wonderfully absurd, musically it jumps all over the show, the range of emotions gets me every time, and some of the lyrics are so bizarre that it just makes perfect sense to me. This epic song is my musical sanctuary.
