Concerning Andrea Hoyle's letter to the Sun last week.
I believe the crossings at Bethlehem school are controlled Kea crossings and as such cars stop when the stop signs are put out. All children were trained to wait for a gap in the traffic or a car gives way. I recognise traffic should be slower at the time school is going in or out. I have enclosed below a piece from the NZ Rode Code which describes operation of the crossings.
'School Crossings - School crossings, also known as kea crossings, provide a safe place for children to safely cross the road. They generally only operate before and after school.
'When school crossings are operating, a fluorescent orange Children sign will be displayed, along with a School Patrol Stop sign, which swings out into the road.
'When the School Patrol Stop sign is out, vehicles coming from both directions must stop and stay stopped until all signs have been pulled in.”

Do we await a disaster, a child to be injuried.

I totally agree with both of your comments! I have witnessed numerous incidents at this crossing, and been the recipient of abuse by ignorant individuals who should NOT be behind the wheel of a motor vehicle! I was nearly hit today when on the crossing by one such individual, and they had the cheek to have a go at me! We dont want someone to be hurt or worse killed before something is done to educate people when driving past schools. I look forward to Wednesday when I am on crossing duty again! :)
