Teen killed in head-on crash

An 18-year-old Tauranga man has died after a two-car head-on crash on State Highway 29A, near Maungatapu.

Emergency services were called to the scene of the crash, just past the Maungatapu Bridge, about 7.30pm.

The crash involved a white Toyota hatchback and a black Vauxhall vehicle, says Senior Sergeant Shannon Clifford.

“State Highway 29A Maungatapu was closed and diversions were put in place whilst emergency services and the Police serious crash unit were in attendance at the scene.

“It’s too early to indicate the cause of the accident but it is believed that one of the vehicles crossed the centre line. The road was re-opened at about 11:30pm.”

Next of Kin have been advised but the name of the deceased will not be released until the family has had time to inform relatives.

Police are asking for witnesses to the crash to come forward and can contact Tauranga Police on 07 577 4300.

Alternatively, information can be left anonymously via the Crimestoppers 0800 555 111 line.

’Crossed the centre line’. It’s like a broken record. When will people learn to keep to THEIR side of the road.
