About 40 members of the Maketu community attended the Waitangi service at Pukemaire hill above Maketu Primary School on Sunday.
This was led by Reverend Kotene Pihema and his assistant Marilyn Williams.

Pukemaire played a significant role in the history of Maketu, as it was an ancient pa site and later became used as a fort.
Hans Zeuleveot and partner Wietzke, visiting Maketu from Holland, spoke on the mixture of cultures and how they celebrated freedom after the World War Two in the Netherlands.

This was followed by a full cooked breakfast provided by Maketu Surf Life Saving Club at the Surf Life Saving, Maketu Rotary clubrooms.
