Surf fans are filling up the grandstands fast at the Lion Foundation Surf League – the final event of the Festival of Surf Sports which ends this weekend.
The Lion Foundation Surf League is a national league where lifeguards compete for their region in 16 different events in the open and under-19 categories. This includes the IRB Assembly which the Bay of Plenty under-19 team won this morning.

Events are running all day today and start again on Sunday at 8am.
Visit Mount Main Beach this weekend to see some top surf lifesavers showcase their craft before the festival ends on Sunday.
Festival of Surf Sports has encompassed eight different surfing events and was put together in support of Surf Lifesaving New Zealand's 100 birthday.
'It's a special year for us and we thought we had to do something to celebrate it,” says Surf Lifesaving New Zealand chief executive Grant Florence.
