Time running out for Thames voters

This November, Thames voters will decided whether or not to continue adding fluoride to the town's water supply.

But if you are not registered on the electoral roll by this Wednesday (September 9) you will not be able to have your say or cast a vote in the referendum.

The referendum is being run independently our the Thames-Coromandel District Council by Election Services, who also run the council elections.

To vote you must be over 18, live within the water supply's area of service or be a non-resident ratepayer who owns a property in the area, and most importantly – be on the electoral roll.

Council says locals can check to see if they're on the electoral roll by calling 07-868-0200, or by popping into their main reception on Mackay Street before 12pm this Wednesday.

'Our council is taking a neutral stance on the issue and will not be releasing any materials on the pros or cons of fluoridating water.

'Electors will be asked if they want council to continue adding fluoride to the Thames water supply or if they want Council to stop fluoride being added.”

The Thames water supply area of service covers properties from Tararu in the north down to Kopu. Te Ana Lane in the Kauaeranga Valley is the eastern extent on the network.

Fluoride has been added to the supply since the 1970s for the purpose of reducing tooth decay.

'Voting is not compulsory but we're encouraging as big a turnout as possible to make sure people have their say. A simple majority either way is sufficient for a decision to be made.”
