Rural broadband meeting in Te Puru

Next month locals are invited to a community meeting about the roll out of the Government's Rural Broadband Initiative in Te Puru.

The Thames-Coromandel District Council says staff will be hosting a special community meeting and information session at Te Puru Hall on Wednesday, August 5, from 7pm.

Because Ultra-Fast Broadband isn't feasible for every rural community, broadband internet with speeds of up to 5Mbps is being provided to more than 90 per cent of homes and businesses outside of UFB areas.

'The Te Puru site was chosen last year as one of two rural sites for increased wireless coverage on the Coromandel,” says council. 'This site will also provide increased mobile coverage across the firth.

'Representatives from Vodafone will present the proposed plans for wireless broadband and mobile coverage in Te Puru, answer questions and gain community feedback.”

Council is putting in a bid for a slice of the $360 million the Government has announced it will spend on improving broadband coverage around the country.

The Thames-Coromandel UFB bid was submitted three weeks ago.

The Rural Broadband Initiative to be discussed at the Te Puru community meeting is part of the original rollout plan, but is is different to the UFB bid process.
