Wharf Street in central Tauranga will be closed to vehicles for the next two days.
The closure is to allow for the installation of fittings and suspension wires in preparation for the Wharf Street Dining Precinct.
Wharf Street, between The Strand and Willow Street, will be closed to traffic for two days. Photo: File.
The vehicular closure begins on Wednesday, July 15 and will run through until Thursday, 16 July.
There is also the possibility of closure on Friday.
However, the street will remain open for pedestrians, and local businesses.
Once the precinct is established, the street will be one way for vehicles and shared with pedestrians.

Costs?

Another waste of rate payers money. If they want a closed street for restaurants perhaps the council could persuade the restauranters to move to the red square.

subject and typically it's a nay sayer. How Tauranga like. MIMBY's and nay sayers. For god sake when will people ever let this city develop without bitching about every move made to improve it. It's 2015 people not 1905.....thinking about it people were more progressive thinking in TGA in 1905 maybe if the city went far enough backward to please the Nay sayers it would actually end up going forward. That way when the sailing ships come back into port there will be some entertainment for the travellers.

not knowing what a MIMBY or a NaySayer are or what they do, I suggest you go back to where they speak your language, and give your opinions to the people that live there, because around here everyone is entitled to an opinion right or wrong, so progression involves interaction and some thought which is sadly lacking in the turgid decisions made by this Council, why cannot I voice my disapproval at the squandering of my money, when as a city we have a storm water system that harks back to the days of the sailing ships you mention, I am certainly not against progression, what I am against is the inane decisions that get made at the expense of basics, so tell me am I a MIMBY ( sounds like someone who likes rainbows) nope not me, a NaySayer maybe.

If you have nothing nice to say don't say anything at all......I was just down Napier a city with a few 1 way streets and shared areas and it worked really well maybe it should be done a bit more in town.

You're up the creek without a paddle on this one. Economics, improvements, nice to haves and all that wonderful stuff are all great and everyone jus loves it all. Sadly here in TCC the costs are astronomical and completely nuts. The lot are simply burying the future generations in mountains of debt. Just take a look at Smart(NOT)growth, they plan to borrow billions, then hope one day, some day, maybe that the money will miraculously appear from who knows where?
I'm with you

s83cruiser. If the original residents of Tauranga had behaved like this there wouldn't be anything here today. We already lack the facilities enjoyed by some smaller places. I say to you rogue, if you don't like living here move to Africa. I'm sure there are plenty of towns there that would satisfy you.
Hope it works.

This is a step in the right direction, as I don't enjoy dining on Strand, with diesel trucks, trains, hoons etc joining us a la carte. I do however think that those eateries on the sunny side of the street will have a distinct advantage.

Absolutely, may I suggest a crowdfunding exercise to forcibly relocate the whingers in the name of progress? I'll be heading in to check out the dining precinct, sounds like fun

so why did you relocate here, your basic amenities in Auckland you would not pay for in rates increases, so you possibly sell your over inflated property and move here and want everything for nothing, progression comes at a cost and that cost has to be justified and planned, Tauranga had the city manager Auckland has now, and look at the state of the finances of both, progression is not a problem, the problem is wasting money on a CBD that is dead anyway at the expense of basics!!!, a dining precinct wow thats original!!!.
