New dementia service launched

A new health service has been launched to meet an increasing demand on community support for people living with dementia-related disease.

This new service will assist people living with dementia and their primary carer by linking them up with a ‘navigator' provided by Alzheimers Waikato who'll help people to navigate the system.

Launched in conjunction with the Waikato DHB, the service is an extension of the ALZWELL programme offered by Alzheimers Waikato. It can be accessed once carers have completed the ALZWELL programme.

Waikato DHB says navigators will promote understanding of services available, plus how and when to access these as needs change.

'The navigator ‘walks' alongside the carer on their unique journey with dementia, as the end point is not always clear and the journey can take many unexpected turns.

'The long term purpose of the service is to support the carer so that the person with dementia can remain living in their own home for as long as they and the person or persons caring for them can be safely supported to do so.”

Alzheimers Waikato manager Sue O'Donnell says the organisation is delighted to be able to offer this level of service to carers of people with dementia.

For more information about the service and how to access support call Alzheimers Waikato on 07-929-4042.
