A recent survey showed that many people are fed up with being made to feel guilty by the eco-movement. Most of these same people, however, (not me) seem willing to do their bit; such as sorting plastic from glass, changing that dripping tap washer etc. But when it comes to riding wooden bicycles, eating whole-meal bacon, reusing toilet paper, or wearing a dead cat as a hat so as not to waste it (that sort of thing) most sensible people realise that they are wasting their time, and are actually, secretly, proud and deserving of their material wealth.
And then there is the problem of encouragement. Doing all the recycling, organic toothpaste, free range pasta stuff; or the extra virtuous, washing-your-hair-in-urine, only encourages the usually city-living, finger pointing – and lets face it – preacher, dictatorial, anti-human greenies to tell us what to do more often. On the outside most, good, industrialised folk think they are doing their bit whilst maintaining a healthy respect for the fruits of western civilization. At the first sign of being lectured by the churchmen of Later Day Troglodytes, they'll puff their chest out (a wee bit anyway) and mumble to themselves that they'll not be told what to do. But then the pangs of guilt come back, as right in the middle of Family Guy an ad comes on with that nice girl from that whale movie; they can't bear to look at the screen for they know that they are not worthy, that they haven't done enough. 'I suppose we should do more,” says mum, and tomorrow little Ethan, Apple, and Mum and Dad will all start the day with a nice glass of freshly-squeezed, organic tofu juice. Sure, eventually they'll fade back into the comfortable easy life of longer showers and the lights left on; then bang, along will come another intellectual giant of a celebrity – perhaps Elmo from Sesame Street or Barney from The Simpsons to remind them of their errant ways.
This new eco-religion peddles the same tripe as religion of old. It's forced on our kids at schools, eschatologist journalists peddle it in the papers and on TV, it's preached in Christian churches as well now; the Dalai Lama – that interminable wind bag – bangs on about it too. Same old stuff: guilt, sin, penance, punishment, privation, and self-sacrifice; and all the other psychologically dangerous chanting of anti-human self-abasements.
I say bugger off to them all – I'm sick of them! I implore all of you who really do love life, and really do wish to leave your children a better future: drop the meekness and obedience, don't give in to them; and above all live the life of a human.
