According to a report from the US based Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3),
men are more susceptible to online scams than women. Men loose nearly twice as much money online.
It seems men have their ego to blame and are suckered in by business investment schemes – making a quick buck.
Investment fraud reports were mostly submitted by men and the average loss was a staggering US$3500. It also seems men are still falling for the Nigerian letter scam, loosing an average US$2000. This figure reminds me of the old saying "there's one born every minute".
The one area where men and women seem to be equal is auction fraud, with the average loss US$480. This is when someone fails to supply goods which have been purchased on sites like Ebay and our own TradeMe. This may be in part because of the systems they have in place to protect users.
The overall figures for how much the bad guys are netting have been increasing but the number of complaints have dropped. IC3 believe people are getting smarter, but the dumb ones are loosing more. The crooks made US$239 million in 2007.
The top three countries for the source of online scams are the US, UK and Nigeria.
So please, when you get an email which starts with "dear beloved one" and says they have 30 million in the bank but cannot get to it – delete it, don't reply to say unsubscribe me from your list or anything else, just delete.
Remember the old saying, "If it seems too good to be true, it probably is."
