Tributes pour in for Jack

Tributes are flowing in for Jack Dixon, the five-year-old boy swept out to sea while playing with family members in Mount Maunganui yesterday.

Jack was with his Grandmother, Aunt and other family members when a large wave swept him and two girls, aged 12 and 14, out in an area known as Shelly Bay at around 11.50am.

Jack Dixon turned five last month.

The girls managed to scramble to a nearby rock and were brought ashore by two adults.

Sadly, Jack disappeared from view.

Despite search teams scouring the shoreline and waters surrounding The Mount, there has been no sign of Jack.

His parents, Wayne Dixon and Karen Spargo, describe their little boy as having a fondness for bikes, lego and rugby.

They are shocked and upset with what has happened. Read more here.

Since news of Jack's disappearance broke yesterday, an outpouring of support has come in from the community.

People on SunLive's Facebook page have posted numerous comments showing their support.

'Beautiful boy, much love to the family xxxx Hope you come home soon,” says one post.

'This breaks my heart. So so sad! I hope they find him, beautiful lil man. Thoughts and prayers to his family at this horrible time xo,” reads another.

Other people have written words of comfort to the family.

'Condolences to the family at this unfortunate time. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Hope you get some closure soon,” one post reads.

Another says: 'Much love to the whanau xx. Such a beautiful looking boy to be lost so young. Thinking of friends and family at such a hard time.”

And on the Bay of Plenty Police Facebook page, Jack's sister Hayley Dixon wrote: 'He is the kindest, cheekiest most amazing little man and he was the last person to ever deserve this. We just want him back. I love you jack and always will x.”

Police have also been fielding numerous calls from the Tauranga community asking how they can help Jack's family.

'The outpouring of support has been overwhelming and this included an incredibly touching candlelight vigil down at the beach last night,” says a statement from police.

'We have arranged for the Mount Maunganui Surf Club to be a collection point for anyone wanting to drop off a written card or message for the family.

'We have also had numerous offers of food and this can also be left at the surf club. This will be provided to the family and to searchers, therefore food that doesn't need to be eaten immediately is preferable so it doesn't go to waste.”
