Name of sea victim released

Police have named five-year-old Jack Dixon as the boy swept out to sea by a large wave at Mount Maunganui yesterday.

Jack turned five in September and was with his Grandmother, Aunt and other family members when he went missing from an area known as Shelly Beach.

Jack Dixon was swept away at sea yesterday.

Two girls, aged 12 and 14, were also swept out with the wave but managed to scramble to a nearby rock before being helped to shore by two adults.

Sadly, Jack disappeared from view.

His parents Wayne Dixon and Karen Spargo say their son had a fondness of bikes, lego and rugby.

'We are shocked, upset, and lost at what has happened. We want to thank police, lifeguards, and everyone who has done so much for us.

'We know there is so much community support, and we're truly touched. Jack will be missed by everyone who knew him. We just want him to come home.”

Jack has four sisters aged 11, 17, 18 and 20.

The search is continuing for Jack since he went missing about 12pm yesterday.

What a terrible tragedy. My thoughts and prayers are with the family at this sad time. How precious life is, but how quickly it can be snatched away.
