Stabbing accused: no plea

The 43-year-old man alleged to have stabbed two people and pointed a rifle at a police officer in Bethlehem has elected to spend another night in jail.

Rodney Lewis Gates was further remanded in custody without plea and by consent when he appeared before a Tauranga District Court Community Magistrate today.

Gates is charged with two counts of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, unlawful possession of a firearm, using a firearm against a law enforcement officer, and cultivating cannabis.

According to the summary of facts police were called to a domestic related incident in Bethlehem on Saturday after two people were stabbed.

Police say one received a superficial stab wound to the abdomen and the other received a superficial stab wound to the elbow in the assault. They were treated at Tauranga Hospital and discharged.

The police armed offenders squad was called to the scene where Gates is accused of pointing a .22 calibre rifle at one of the AOS members.

Gates will reappear in Tauranga District Court on Tuesday.
