Man charged with stabbing

Tauranga police have arrested a 43-year-old local man after he allegedly stabbed two people and pointed a firearm at a policeman overnight.

Police were called to what they're calling a domestic related incident in Bethlehem on Saturday.

Police say one victim received a superficial stab wound to the abdomen and the other received a superficial stab wound to the elbow in the assault.

Both victims are adults and were treated at Tauranga Hospital prior to being discharged. During the incident, the Police Armed Offender Squad was utilised.

Police have charged the man with two charges of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Police say the man has also been charged with presenting a firearm at one of the Armed Offender Squad members as well as unlawful possession of a .22 calibre rifle.

Detective Sergeant Alan Kingsbury says a scene examination will be completed this morning and that a number of witnesses are yet to be spoken to.

The man will make his initial appearance in the Tauranga District Court tomorrow.
