The owner of a cat found in a pool of blood on the doorstep of her Gate Pa home says she immediately feared for her two young daughters' safety.

Opie Yates' two month old kitten called Jonny was found dead on Thursday morning after being violently thrown against a wall near her front door.

'If someone can do this to my kitten, they might be able to hurt my daughters too,” says Opie.

Tauranga police are still searching for the offender and believe the violent attack happened sometime early Thursday morning.

Opie opened her front door to let Jonny in for his breakfast when she made the gruesome discovery.

'There was blood coming out of his eyes. You could see someone had grabbed him around his neck.”

She says the kitten was lying in a pool of blood on the ground and blood was splattered up the walls of the house.

Opie last saw Jonny at about 10.30pm the night before and believes he would have been sleeping in his normal box near the front door when the attacker grabbed him.

'Whoever came here last night wasn't right in the head.”

The attack is just one of many animal cruelty cases in Tauranga in the past two weeks.

A pitbull puppy was found at the Gate Pa shops on November 27 with its ears cut off and a dog died inside a carport on Monday after the building was deliberately torched by offenders still being sought by police.

SPCA welfare inspector Jason Blair does not believe the incidents are connected.

He says there were two other serious animal cruelty cases on Thursday.

A young puppy was seen being punched by its owner in Greerton at about 11am and another dog was seen being violently kicked by its owner.

Two neglected dogs were found earlier in the week by SPCA and were only being ‘intermittently' fed.

Jason believes they would not have lasted much longer.
