Poppy project proves popular

As they glue their little red poppies on to their handcrafted Anzac wreaths, Tauranga children are remembering the soldiers who lost their lives in battle.

About 15 children, aged five to seven-years-old, attended visual artist Emma Prill's paper wreath making workshop at Tauranga Art Gallery this morning to commemorate 100 years since World War I.

A second session for eight to 14-year-olds will be held at the gallery from 1pm to 3pm.

While the children create their hand-painted wreaths, Emma is educating the children on the significance of the project.

'We've also talked about the Anzac services they attended on Saturday morning. I think they knew exactly why they were coming and this symbolism of what they're making is very important to them.”

Emma says the children are also learning a few different paper craft techniques.

'They're learning about collaging paper, different techniques of painting on to paper and then reconstructing that into a three-dimensional piece of work.”

Sessions cost $15 per child, or $40 for adults. Bookings can be made at Tauranga Art Gallery or call 578 7933.
