Man dies at Oropi Quarry

UPDATE 1.12pm: A 25-year-old man has died after an accident at Oropi Quarry involving a 45-tonne rock cutter.

Emergency services are currently at the quarry on McPhail Road in the Western Bay of Plenty.


The incident happened at Oropi Quarry.

At approximately midday, the rock cutter tipped in the quarry, trapping the male driver who died at the scene.

The fire service are working through the process of righting the vehicle to retrieve the deceased.

The Police Serious Crash unit will be investigating the cause of the accident and occupational Safety and Health have been notified.

Emergency services are responding to reports of an accident involving a rock cutter at Oropi Quarry this afternoon.

While exact details are yet to emerge, it is understood a man involved in the incident is currently unaccounted for.

Reports suggest expert crews are on their way to the scene where the rock cutter has rolled.
