Labour leader in town

Labour Party leader Andrew Little is in town for the day and has spiralling rents, homelessness and job creation in his sights.

In his first official visit as leader of the opposition, Andrew will share his time between Tauranga Business leaders and a public meeting in Merivale.

He is guest speaker at the Tauranga Chamber of Commerce lunch, focusing on the future of the Bay of Plenty's Economy.

The public meeting at the Merivale Community Centre from 2.15pm will be directed at housing and jobs. The housing topic will touch on a lack of affordable housing, spiraling rents, the chronic rental shortage and increasing homelessness.

Earlier this week Andrew called for the sacking of Tauranga MP and Transport Minister Simon Bridges after accusing him of seeking information from roading officials in the days leading up to last month's major Northland by-election announcement.

Elected into Parliament in 2011, Andrew took over as leader of the opposition last November after former leader David Cunliffe's resignation triggered a party-wide leadership election.

David's resignation came after the National Party gained 47 per cent of the party vote and 60 of the 121 seats in the general election.

Andrew fended off fellow MPs Nanaia Mahuta, David Parker, and Grant Robertson for the role.
