Emergency services were called to the crash between Turret Rd and Maungatapu roundabout about 4am.

Tauranga Fire Brigade senior firefighter Robert Pinkerton says two men managed to free themselves from the vehicle when firefighters arrived.

He says one man was assessed by St John Ambulance staff before he was taken to Tauranga Hospital in a minor condition.

The car was not on fire when firefighters arrived, says Robert. 'But the power pole was down”.

Tauranga Police acting sergeant Ben Dickinson says alcohol is a factor in the crash. He says the driver blew a blood alcohol reading of 495.

The passenger did not get out of the vehicle. He was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected through the windscreen.
