Tauranga Boys open account

Tauranga Boys' College have made a promising start to their tilt for a third Super Eight Cricket title, accounting for Napier Boy's High School on the opening day.

Hosted by Tauranga Boys' this week, the annual tournament sees the eight heavyweights of North Island secondary school cricket square off at the school's Nicholson Field and Ferguson park, Matua ahead of finals day on Thursday.

Batting first, the home side posted 176 against Napier Boys, with Josh Healy-Ormrod top scoring with a solid 65. Isaiah Lange was the best of the Hawkes Bay sides' bowling attack, finishing with four wickets for 30 runs.

Bay of Plenty age group rep Sean Wakelin did the damage with the ball as Napier Boys were skittled for just 92, to give the home side a comfortable 84-run victory.

Wakelin was in top form with a five wicket bag, with Kamal Bains bowling with real economy to grab three wickets at a cost of just five runs.

Palmerston North Boys High cruised to an easy victory over the Tauranga Boys second XI, who were a late call-up to the tournament.

The Tauranga Boys' seconds had first use of the batting crease at Ferguson Park and mustered 106.

Palmerston North bowler Jack Lord roared through the home side's batting attack, to be rewarded with four wickets for just six runs.

The Manawatu team then cantered to victory for the loss of just two wickets with Mason Hughes taking his side to victory with 62 not out.

New Plymouth Boys High School were another team to post a target and then bowl their way to victory.

New Plymouth were dismissed for 190 by Hastings Boys, but fought back to dismiss the Hawkes Bay side for 131.

Individual New Plymouth highlights in the match were Kaylum Basher smashing a half century with Taylor Williams returning 3/35. Barclay Thomas took 3/44 for Hastings.
