Bike riding for Pukehina brigade

The Pukehina Fire Brigade's fun walk was so much fun last year they've extended it by adding a run and a walk to the fundraiser on tomorrow, December 28.

'It's not a race, it's a family thing where people pay $2 to enter,” says organiser Ants Meyer.

Ants Meyer and Pukehina fire brigade supporters are inviting people to take part in the fun bike ride walk on December 28.

The walkers' route is the two kilometres or so from the Pukehina Fire Brigade to the star location of the movie ‘The Z Nail Gang', the bar and restaurant The Hippy Pipi, and back again.

The walkers and runners travel the six kilometres from the fire station to the estuary and back.

'You can either run all the way or use your bike all the way,” says Ants.

'We started off last year and we want it to be an annual thing.

'We had a great response, so this year we have incorporated the biking and the walking to get more people involved, like nanas with their grandies in pushchairs and things like that.

'Afterwards, there are spot prizes and a sausage sizzle to raise funds for our first-response vehicle.”

Start time for the walkers is 10am with the runners and bikers starting 10.15am.

'Just come along and have a bit of fun. Anyone can be involved. If people can only do half the walk, we have a John Deer gator at the back. It's a six-wheel vehicle with trailer that can take the bikes.

'And there's the first-response vehicle, and the car that does the community patrols.”

The Pukehina brigade, with 19 volunteers, has attended 109 call outs so far this year.

Chief fire Officer Errol Watts will be taking part in the bike ride with his grandson. Ants doesn't think Errol will need the help of the gator, or the first-response vehicle.

'He's a fit man, he does Coast to Coasts and things like that.”

Among prizes is one for best-dressed on the bike ride, says Ants.
