Paraglider crashes on Mauao

UPDATE: A paraglider has a busted ankle after he crashed into the side of Mauao this afternoon.

The man, believed to be in his 30s, is being brought down from the north eastern side of The Mount before being taken to Tauranga Hospital.

A paraglider who brought the man's canopy out with the stretcher party says the injured man wasn't doing anything stupid.

"He just got unlucky with the collapse of a wing tip."

He said the injured man was in the process of recovering from the incident when he ran into the trees.

His right ankle was splinted and St John ambulance staff were offering him NO2 whiule he was being carried down the Whaikorire Track to the waiting surf club vehicle.

Emergency services are scaling Mauao this afternoon to help a paraglider who has crashed.

A Mount Maunganui surf lifesaver says the man has crashed on the north eastern side of The Mount, above the camping ground.

St John Paramedics have been taken to the paraglider's location and are treating his injuries.

The surf lifesaver says they will bring the paraglider down soon.

How the crash happened is under investigation.
