French tourist makes contact

UPDATE: Police have made contact with French tourist Celine Vitrouil.

Celine is in Te Anau and was not aware she had been reported missing.

Celine Therese Anne Vitrouil has made contact with police.

Police say this incident reinforces the importance of accommodation suppliers obtaining contact details of travellers using their facilities.

"We also urge anyone heading on an outdoor activity to make sure that someone reliable knows where you are going and when you intend to return," says a statement from police.

"It is important that you update that person when you have returned safely."

Bay of Plenty Police are issuing an appeal on behalf of their Christchurch counterparts for any information about 23-year-old French tourist Celine Therese Anne Vitrouil.

Celine left a note indicating she would return to collect a bag from an Arthur's Pass backpackers on December 10 after a three-day tramp on route 12 (Cass Saddle).

'At this stage no-one can confirm if she collected her bag or not,” says a statement from police.

'It is possible that Celine has continued her travels in New Zealand and forgot to leave a note at the backpackers saying she had returned.”

Police have visited the huts on the route and spoken to someone who was on the same route with her, but are keen to speak to her to confirm she is safe.

'If you are Celine, you know her or have seen her please contact Police on: 03 363 7670 or send a Facebook message.”

Alternatively, information can be left anonymously via the Crimestoppers line on: 0800 555 111.
