Dry soil heightens drought fears

Soils in the Tauranga region are extremely dry for this time of year and need sustained rain over several weeks to return to normal.

That is the warning coming from the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research, who have suggested that without rain, and if current conditions persist, then drought may be imminent.

'Drought may be imminent” according to the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research.

This means rain, and plenty of it, is what farmers, orchardists and gardeners need but it's probably not what holiday makers are wishing for.

NIWA's weekly advisory service 'Hotspot Watch” says soils continue to be much drier than normal for much of the eastern and far southern sections of the North Island.

Locations in and around Tauranga to near East Cape have severely to extremely dry soils for this time of year and abnormally dry soils are also found south along to Hawke's Bay, Wairarapa, Wellington and southern Manawatu-Wanganui regions.

There is some evidence of deteriorating conditions, in terms of coverage and dryness, over the eastern Waikato and Bay of Plenty regions with slight improvement over the Wairarapa region.

Soil moisture deficit is the amount of water needed to bring the soil moisture content back to field capacity, which is the maximum amount of water the soil can hold.

Soil moisture anomaly is the difference between the historical normal soil moisture deficit (or surplus) for a given time of year and actual soil moisture deficits.

Farmers and growers will be hoping that international predictions of a 75 per cent chance for El Nino weather patterns developing over the December 2014 – February 2015 period are wrong.

During El Nino, New Zealand tends to experience stronger or more frequent winds from the west in summer, typically leading to drought in east coast areas and more rain in the west.

NIWA is reporting that some – but importantly not all – atmospheric indicators show patterns consistent with the development of a weak El Nino.

Isn't Rapid Climate Change wonderful for its power to reduce human race to insect animal and bird food as masses are culled off decades ahead roll on.This Rapid Heating is something I have dedicated my life from 1984 to warning my fellow man of since my having being warned from above of its yet to be mega impending fatal impacts for Mankind. When giving this warning here/NZ I was not prepared or expecting the racism, anger and hate that would be meted out to me from all comers who were and still are highly skeptical that its even happening. These people totally deluded by their own minds into ignoring what is NOW evident, preferring to listen to the likes of Leighton Smith who is a paid Climate Denier who's aim is to stop any attempts at mitigation. An Enemy of LIFE upon this World and Others is HE

planted a plum tree the other day the top 300mm was just dust, just because this could be our 5th dry summer does not mean climate change, Earths weather is always changing,A volcanoe going up eg Pinatubo 1991 dropped world temps the following 2 years,

Wow - its just a drought!

O Wisechief, the runes didn't lie. On the other hand it looks like we have the makings of a drought in the El Nino cycle, helped along by a bit of Earth climate change. Farm irrigators have been out for a few weeks and I have been watering my lawn - local intervention policies, crickets not on the menu yet.

Good to see Capt.Caveman you are already getting into the vogue with your handle of Caveman for as sure as Rapid Climate Change will ramps up to huge extremes to toast us all, such a hole in the ground Cave will be our new residences. Oh, and just in case one get lonely, don't forget the all important Club? For mating purposes of course as there won't be many wild animals around who have survived. Be back to the good old days of grass skirts and eating the grains off the top of wild grasses. Did you know Morphic Fields of species will change as temp rise and we will see all sorts of new and wonderful flying fanged nasties which will devour ones flesh with acid spit. Nice one humanity or was that the idiot species out on the edges of this spiraling galactic arm. We have lost plane
