Fashion show raises $17k for Cambodia

Two Cambodian schools will be supported for the next 12 months thanks to the success of a fashion show in Tauranga.

The event at Classic Flyers last Saturday raised more than $17,000 for the Tauranga-based Cambodia Charitable Trust.

Tauranga lawyer Denise Arnold, who founded the Cambodia Charitable Trust, says the event was so successful that it would be repeated next year to ensure ongoing funding for Cambodian schools Ang Run Primary and Taten Primary.

Ang Run Primary was also supported by Tauranga's Greenpark School earlier in the year, with the donation of water tanks.

'The generosity of Tauranga people to help these children is extremely heart-warming,” says Denise.

'We would like to thank everyone who attended and supported the show. This means that not only can we provide these children with an education, but also help to keep them safe.”

A full-time partner at Lyon O'Neale Arnold, Denise set up the trust after travelling to Cambodia in 2007 to see first-hand the suffering of children there.

The trust, which aims to transform the lives of children through education, now supports 4700 children in Cambodia, providing bikes, uniforms, stationary, books, toilets, clean water and teacher training. It fully supports 10 schools and two teacher-training colleges and partially supports four other schools.

reality check though..... 17K raised, what is the bottom line?, and how much actually reaches its destination?, while just down the road in Merivale ( example) school children turn up to learn unfed and wet and cold, and become the Education systems problem, should not charity begin at home?, or does that not garner the press or kudos of raising money for another countries schools?, my apologies for being negative, but I would rather give my hard earned dollar to helping our own children!!!!.

Good work

NZ support our Pacific Island neighbours with funding, we send support to nations when disaster strikes whether it be a Tsunami or any other disaster. Funny enough when the Christchurch earthquake strikes overseas people & money was sent over here. Truly we live in a global society. Cambodia is an amazing place that needs as much help as possible. If you did a little research into their history you would see how war & tyrants have resulted in a country that is in need of help. Awesome work by this trust. It's great to see that Denise has seen a need & done something about it. Most people see issues & walk past them (including in Tauranga & NZ).

you scared of others not sharing your opinion???, as apparently that is what open forums are about..... go live there if you think our country and our children are not in need of help, I am not doubting Cambodia, like Seirra Leone, and many others around the Globe need assistance, but do you not wince when you pass children crying for help here, or is it just our own do not matter, as it is more "glamerous" to say you are raising money for the education of children in Cambodia, rather than saying you are contributing for a 5 year old in Mangere to be able to walk to school in the rain dry under a raincoat????, and natural disasters and global assistance is something different again.
