Bridge strengthening work continues

Delays are expected on State Highway 2, south of Katikati, as work continues to strengthen Wainui Bridge this month.

Works on the bridge, located between Work Road and Sargent Drive, began on Monday.

Motorists are being advised to expect delays on SH2, south of Katikati, for the next two weeks.

The NZ Transport Agency says shoulder closures will also be in place ahead of a series of lane closures over the next fortnight.

Periodic stop/go traffic management and speed restrictions will be in place during the project, which is expected to be complete in mid-December.

Motorists should expect delays of up to 10 minutes when travelling over the bridge, says NZ Transport Agency's Bay of Plenty journey manager Nigel D'Ath.

'The strengthening work involves installation of new steel beams alongside the existing concrete beams to increase the load capacity of the bridge,” he says.
