Pitching in to clean-up reserve

Bethlehem Primary School children will be getting stuck in to pick up rubbish in Tauranga's Gordon Carmichael Reserve this week.

The clean-up, on Friday October 17, is part of the Communities for Clean Water campaign organised by the New Zealand Landcare Trust, and supported by Bay of Plenty Regional Council, Tauranga City Council, Downer, Tauranga Envirohub and Bethlehem Coachlines.

Bethlehem Primary School children will help clean up Tauranga's Gordon Carmichael Reserve on Friday.

It launches the campaign's ‘Weekend of Action', with 170 students taking part alongside neighbours and other volunteers. Anyone can take part in the clean-up to remove car tyres, plastic bottles and other rubbish.

BOPRC's Regional Direction and Delivery Committee chair Paula Thompson says the students will learn more about sustainability and their local environment on the day before heading off to collect rubbish.

And there is a barbecue lunch to look forward to once the job is complete.

Paula says: 'The Communities for Clean Water campaign encourages people to take an active interest in projects and activities that contribute to maintaining and restoring waterways.

'During the Weekend of Action, a series of events will take place around the country promoting the issues affecting water quality, and removing rubbish from around the reserves is a way we can remove one source of pollution.”
