Adorning pink outfits, as many as 500 people walked from Papamoa Surf Life Saving Club, along the beach and back again to raise funds for Tauranga men and women diagnosed with breast cancer.

The walk was officially opened by Papamoa mother-of-three Denise Narruhn who cut the pink ribbon. The 61-year-old was diagnosed with breast cancer in March.

Service co-ordinator Lea Lehndorf says the day's weather turned out fine despite yesterday's mix of rain, hail and sunshine. Lea says that may have contributed to the lesser entries this year.

'There's probably about 400-500 people down here, whereas normally we see about 800 people.

'We've got young and old, and lots of dogs dressed in pink as well.”

Lea says participants were gifted with goodies from Maybelline and Pak n Save while on the beach walk, as well as small prizes for people who walked through Papamoa Top 10 Holiday Park.

'So everyone's getting a little something back for the donation that they've given to us.”

Describing people's pink attire, Lea says there were many rosy T-shirts and hats, with some people deciding to dye their hair and dress their dogs in pink vests for the occasion.

'Thanks to everyone who has come down today and supported local women, we look forward to doing it again next year.”
