Human bones remain on site

Archaeologists uncovering pre-European human remains at a Katikati building site believe the find is nothing out of the ordinary and they're working through correct processes with hapu.

The skeletal remains were uncovered by archaeologists on Friday at a construction site on Park Road, Katikati.

Mishmish heritage co-director Brigid Gallagher confirmed the bones as pre-European.

'We don't know anything about the person and are working with hapu [Te Rereatukahia Marae part of Ngai Te Rangi iwi].”

Brigid says there is nothing out of the ordinary as the remains were unearthed in a secure archaeological context – where an archaeologist was already on site as part of the building consent.

'It's a site where the client did everything within their due diligence. They had an archaeological authority in place and like a number of archaeological excavations in this country human remains happen to be found.

'It's not an accidental discovery it's something you encounter and there are protocols on place to deal with it and that's what we are doing at the moment.”

It is not yet known the full extent of the remains. Archaeologists had to put their tools down prior to the weekend's forecasted wet weather.

They will instead deal with the bones at a later date once procedures have been finalised with hapu.

'This weekend it was meant to be heavy rain and it didn't really come.

'You need to know there is a couple of really good weather days and if the hapu wants to do something special and organise people then this allows them some time.”
