Humanitarian consideration needed

Having been a victim of Paula Bennett's Social Security Act and her comments about all available assistance to the man in Ashburton on television, I convey my condolences to the families of those who have lost a loved one.

Further consideration desperately needs to be considered on a one-on-one basis for those in financial positions and under extreme stress, not just apply the rules as laid down in the 165 Social Security Act.

I strongly feel for WINZ staff, however unless humanitarian consideration for those in need of urgent assistance in times of stress are taken more seriously I feel further unfortunate circumstances could occur.

As for experiences of my own I find it hard to accept that all available assistance was given to the victim and the attitude of WINZ can upset a person's mind under stress. Don't let this happen to you.

I agree entirely - there is no way anyone would condone the actions of this man, or the murder of the innocent WINZ workers, but I seriously doubt that everything possible was done for this man - and I too am basing this on my own experiences of (thankfully) some years ago. Several years coping with a serious illness all on my own saw me brought to the brink on several occasions. Actions of WINZ staff (for I had to rely on a sickness benefit during this time) varied from the superbly supportive to outright lying and contempt - one being denial of the accommodation benefit I was entitled to as "people like me deserved to live in homeless shelters". And the government now plans to "slash" benefits even further, trading on the common misconception that the majority of those on benefits are bludgers and scammers.
