Spark 'back to normal'

Tauranga Spark customers are continuing to report problems of internet connection despite the company stating the broadband network is returning to normal.

A post to Spark's Facebook page states things are back to normal following yesterday's issues affecting web browsing. But social media posts complaining about no internet connection are continuing to appear on downdetector.co.nz – a website which displays issues effecting Tauranga Spark customers.

The website ‘Spark Tauranga Problems' is receiving posts reading there is no internet in Te Puna, as well as others saying they have some wifi access but are still unable to use the search engine.

Spark's Facebook page says if customers have changed their DNS settings to Google to browse the web yesterday, the company advises they change them back and switch to auto by following steps supplied here.

'Thanks so much for bearing with us, we're sorry for the impact this has had on your weekend.”

In a reply to concerned customers, the social media page states they know a number of customers' devices had been infected with a form of malware that meant their connections were being used in what looks like a global, coordinated DDoS attack on servers overseas.

'The traffic generated as a part of that attack was very large, and very unusual. That much traffic put a massive strain on our DNS servers, which resulted in slow or stalled internet browsing for our customers. 'We're also encouraging all customers to be sure their system firmware and security suites are up to date.

SunLive's calls to Spark stores in Tauranga and Mount Maunganui went unanswered.
