Cyclist seriously injured in Waihi

UPDATED 1.47PM: The serious crash unit is investigating a crash in Waihi which has left a cyclist with serious injuries this afternoon.

Police and St John Paramedics were called to the accident at the intersection of State Highway 2 and Johnson Road, opposite Countdown, just before 12pm.


Police cordoned off the street as they dealt with the accident.

A witness to the incident says it appears the cyclist, believed to be a man, was hit off their bike.

'The Westpac Rescue Helicopter was seen flying low over Waihi after landing at the sports field on Clarke Street.”

Police confirmed the cyclist had been hit by a four door Mazda car and has been airlifted to hospital.

'The serious cash unit is at the scene and police are currently speaking with people at the scene,” says a statement from police.

The crash caused the section of road to be closed briefly. The road is now open.

Emergency services are dealing with a serious crash in Waihi that has closed State Highway 2, from Union Street to Kenny Street.

It's unclear how many cars are involved and how many people have been injured.

The NZ Transport Agency advises motorists to avoid the area if possible or expect delays to their trip.
