Car lovers convoy for charity

More than 100 car enthusiasts are enjoying the sights of Mount Maunganui after driving their modified vehicles to Tauranga City in an on-road attempt to raise money for the Cancer Society.

The modified car display fundraiser saw several car clubs coming together and travel in convoy to reach Mount Maunganui around lunchtime.

More than 100 car lovers checked out each other's rides at the modified car display fundraiser at Mount Maunganui.

Organised by Hamilton Rotary and Turbo Car Club, as part of their Winter Cruise to the Mount, spokesperson Anthony Valvoi says donations and a sausage sizzle collected money for the Cancer Society's Lions Lodge in Hamilton once they arrived.

'We've got well over 100 cars and several hundred people,” says Anthony.

'We've got a lot of modified cars – a lot of rotaries, Nissans, Toyotas, and hot-rod and V8s.”

Anthony says several car clubs came together for the event 'and were just trying to help out for a good cause – it's basically to celebrate the last day of winter, which is tomorrow”.

'We've got people from Auckland, Coromandel, Hamilton, Rotorua and Taupo – all over the North Island basically.”

Anthony says the main cruise left Hamilton at 10am, where all of the cars from Auckland met up with the convoy, 'and the cruise went right up until Tauriko; then we met the Rotorua and Tauranga cars there and came from that point to this destination”.

Mount Maunganui Lions manned the sausage sizzle on Marine parade, while the car lovers checked out each other's rides.

Everyone can be a pain to someone sometimes, no matter what your 'hobbies/passtimes' are... be a little fair on them, their cause is noble so credit where credit is due I say.... glad you guys had a great trip and hopefully you managed to raise a bit of awareness to the cause in your travels.... good onya!
