Tough talking Peters in Katikati

NZ First party leader Winston Peters is talking tough on foreign ownership, land sales and race-based political parties as seen during a public meeting in Katikati today.

In front of standing room only at the War Memorial Hall, Winston addressed the party faithful which was predominantly an older audience

As expected foreign ownership was the central theme of his speech which he interwove into other issues throughout the hour long meeting.

These included housing, the selling off of state-owned assets, land sales, and the banking industry to name a few.

New Zealanders know we are headed in the wrong direction on foreign ownership of our country, says Winston.

'Foreign ownership needs to be put in the wider context of our economy. For years we have been exporting, or as they say, ‘offshoring' our manufacturing base.

'One of these days soon, New Zealand is going to wake up to the fact that the golden goose, dairying, and our marketing of it is no longer in our control.”

Winston says many of NZ's best and most profitable businesses were now under foreign ownership, citing Fisher and Paykel Appliances, plus the country's largest media companies Fairfax and APN as examples.

Winston also takes a crack at the banking sector telling the audience that 95 per cent of the banking system is owned by Australian Banks.

'The result is billions of dollars in profits and dividends going to Australia every year. New Zealand is now just the branch office.

'I'm not anti-Australian. They are our closest neighbours, but you don't give all your money to your neighbour.”

Land sales are also a hot issue with Winston saying the facts surrounding the topic are alarming.

Over one million hectares of New Zealand land, or 'six times the size of Stewart Island”, has passed through the Overseas Investment Office into full or partial foreign control since National has been in office, says Winston.

Describing the OIO as 'a sick joke”, Winston says that on average, for the past three years it has approved a sale every three days.

'In simple terms, under National there is a culture of priority for foreigners over New Zealanders.

'Labour at least are now contrite. They have looked at the facts and changed their policy.”

He promises 'the rubber-stamp is going in the bin” should NZ First make it into Government.

Winston also touched on potential political partners, but like a good poker player, he held his cards very closely to his chest.

One thing is certain though – 'NZ First will never work with a raced based party”.

But as one member of the audience pointed out, that stance could place Peters in an interesting predicament.

National currently works with the Māori Party and Labour appears to be courting the Internet-Mana party.

Winston says his party is on a campaign to maximise their vote and will keep doing so until election day.

'We are not going to be answering any question, the circumstances around which none of us could possibly know.

'The one thing I can tell you is that we're not selling out any of our principles when the election is over. Never have and never will.”

But the quote of the meeting came from a member of the audience when recalling a chance meeting and a question he posed to Winston 40 years earlier in Howick.

'If we put all our politicians in the hole in Waihi, could they work together to get out of the hole?”

A laughing Winston smiled it off then went on to discuss mining.

that Winston First is a passionate New Zealander. In an ideal world every country would be populated solely by those that were born in the country. Unfortunately every country likes to compare itself with the neighbours and the neighbours like to look of our land. You certainly can't blame a landowner for wanting the best return possible for their land and I am definitely not a fan of any politician telling anyone what they can and can't do with their own property. So why do our farmers want to sell their land? Is it the political environment that they are struggling with? Maybe the RMA? Maybe the environMENTALIST lobby? Increase the cost of doing business and see how much more land will become available.

Absolutely on the button Winston in seeking to stop all land sales to foreigners who are not long resident incumbent citizens of our country. We True Kiwis needs to give him our full support for today it has been revealed immigration staff are not doing proper vetting-due diligence of incoming immigrants one allowing a man wanted for murder in. Thus much like letting in all those paramilitary from the African Cape Area and UK who have come here to undermine our nationhood for pecuniary gain.Today we have far to big a chunk of our population renting and constantly in transit which is a sure killer of stable economies and which successive governments have ignored to our collective detriment. Winston is right that the Aussie Banks have been deliberately restricting growth capital to NZ owned businesses for coming on two decades basically engaging in economic war against Kiwis.

believe in "winnie" I would give more credence to believing Australian rugby is in fine fettle, rather than any political posturing by the consummate politician, he will only tell people what the masses want to hear, and can you remember the "winebox" saga, and that was before "Mr Goggle" arrived with his hackers, then we had real break ins and paper trails, with Winston not knowing which way was up.

Very wise chief...sambo doesn't know much

I totally agree with Wise Chief... what if the whole country was sold off to foreigners and we became the tenants in our own land! I don't think so, the government must do something to keep our land our land. The wine box inquiry was Winnie trying to keep the government and government departments honest at the end of the day , whats wrong with that!? Go fight for the Aussies sambo

never said anything about foreign land owners, and frankly the lease hold idea has a tonne of merit, and if you actually got over your blinkered vision, you would actually see I complimented Mr Peters, as for the "wine box" do not make me laugh, and a question for you, when has Winston actually had a major policy idea, and implemented it?, and please .... do not count the Gold Card deal as major, and passion I have running through my veins for this Country, it is why I have stayed to fight for a lifestyle I treasure, do not insult me!!.

I just don't get it

I am at a loss to know what the Winston First supporters see in the man? From what I saw of his last three years in Parliament, he made a huge fuss about dumping one of his acolytes and that seems to about it. Did he "keep the other parties in line"? I don't think so. Did he "keep anyone honest"? I don't think so. Did he have anything constructive tabled or voted upon in the three years? I don't know, but I haven't felt the earth move because of the EIGHT of them in parliament. Go ahead and vote for him, I would just honestly like to know why he is admired. He doesn't seem to do much apart from dress well and smile a lot
