Woman dies after building fall

UPDATE 12.30PM: A 52-year-old woman has died after falling several storeys from the Sharp Tudhope law offices on Devonport Road today.

Tauranga Police Senior Sergeant Shannon Clifford says the 52-year-old died from injuries sustained in the four-storey fall, reported to police at 10.55am today.

Police investigating the scene after the woman was taken to hospital.

The name of the deceased will be withheld until next of kin have been advised.

In a statement released by Sharp Tudhope Lawyers, general manager Peter Wilson says they are shocked and deeply saddened by the incident.

"A woman died after falling from the fourth floor of our building. She was not immediately known to us, but our thoughts and sympathies are with her next of kin.

"We are also focused on supporting our staff, and are working alongside the police."

Detectives are currently at the scene interviewing witnesses on 1st Avenue, near the Pathlab clinic.

St John Ambulance district operations manager Jeremy Gooders says the woman fell several storeys and has been taken to Tauranga Hospital in a critical condition.

A witness working opposite the law firm says she saw her friend working at NZI Insurance on the ground floor of the building rush across to the 2nd Avenue medical centre.

About 15 minutes later two St John Ambulances arrived and began treating a woman on the ground.

A witness says a woman was wearing grey track pants and a pair of sneakers.

Police were seen looking through a pale blue backpack on the driveway behind the law firm.

Sergeant Clifford says police are currently investigating the circumstances.

SunLive is currently waiting for comment from Sharp Tudhope.

A Pathlab Tauranga spokesperson did not personally see what happened but told SunLive two woman from the company rushed out from the building next door to help the woman.

She says the pair heard her fall and are slightly shaken by the incident.

'I work in the building but I wasn't really involved, the two ladies that did help have gone off to have a coffee.”

The $13.5million building at the corner of Devonport Rd and 1st Ave was opened in May 2012 and at the time was the first Green-Star rated office building.

The 2300sqm, four-storey building, houses the law firm's 50 staff. NZI Insurance is located on the ground floor, along with a café.
