Call for politicians to take lead

The Internet Party is challenging other political parties not to turn back the clock to the old election campaigns where Kiwis are played off against other Kiwis.

'No responsible political party in our country should using racial prejudice to win votes,” says Internet Party leader Laila Harre.

'We have been there before. Sometimes it's the Chinese in the gun. This election it is Maori again.”

Ms Harre says the tactics of NZ First, ACT and the Conservatives – hiding behind one-law-for-all rhetoric – were outmoded, dangerous and not reflective of New Zealand.

'Look at the campaign for Commonwealth Games success. Our young people, from so many ethnic backgrounds, are giving everything they've got to achieve medals and to put our nation on the winners' podium. When these young heroes return home, it must not be to a nation divided.

'As we watch the tragedy both in the Ukraine and in Gaza in recent weeks, our message must be that our nation is inclusive.

'We must take a leaf out of the book of our young sportspeople. We can do that by campaigning on the issues, and on the basis of respect for the Treaty of Waitangi, which is a strength of our democracy.”
