Despite emotions running high at times, Arataki gladly took a 22-12 win against Waikite in what coach Mark Latimer describes as a true championship style Bay of Plenty Women's Rugby final.

The two sides met again in a rematch of last season's inaugural final, this time with Arataki claiming the honours at Arataki Park today.

With today's match proving a chance for Arataki to put things right after the heart breaking loss to Waikite in 2013, Mark says emotions were running high with both teams heading into the final showdown in a 19-all draw.

'It was a proper championship style of a final that involved some emotions boiling over at times but focussing on getting the job done by both sides.

'It was a great game all-round and very competitive.”

Mark says the game proved worrying at times with Waikite winning the first half 12-10. But he says it wasn't over until the final whistle.

'We managed to get a bit of a cushion and they came back strong but we were able to hold them out.

'We had a bit of a wind advantage in the second half and although we didn't use it much but when we did use it, it was telling.”

BOP Rugby Union awarded the team with a trophy that they'll keep at the club until its contested again next year.

The team will now spend the rest of the year supporting the club's senior A and B teams as they battle it out on the field in the finals.

Some of the girls have been chosen to play for the Volcanix and will be spending the rest of the year training with them, while others are likely to play casual games against BOP secondary school teams.

Mark says it will be a great boost for the club to see the senior A and B teams take out their final matches of the season.

'That'll be a great year for the club. We've started off on the right foot with the final game to us and then hopefully the A's and the B's will win their finals as well.”
