Your thoughts on dog registrations

The Tauranga community is backing a Maungatapu dog owner's call for dog registration fees to be scrapped.

Michael O'Neill believes responsible dog owners receive nothing in return for paying a $78 annual fee.

Tauranga City Council's deadline for renewing dog registrations at a discounted fee of $78 for the 2014/2015 year is July 31.

From August 1-June 30, 2015, owners pay is $109 to make their pooch legal for the year.

But Maungatapu resident and 2014 TECT Trustee candidate Michael O'Neill says TCC's Animal Services should be funded by fining bad dogs and their owners – not from 'good owners paying registration fees”.

They will probably be registering cats soon, then mabey a budgie registration, goldfish levy.... they are probably trying to work out how they can tax worm farming. They will never remove the dog registration, they have probably already forcast revenue for the next 10 years and the money is already allocated. If you did happen to achieve your goal, they will just have to get the 'lost revenue' from somewhere else. By trying to argue here, they will have to form a commity, find some deligates, pay for some studies, consult experts, pay lawyers, pay someone to re do the revenue forcasts etcetc, so next year dog registration will probably have to go up next year when you lose. Surely by now you know you cant win? Rule number1, you will pay. Rule number2 if in doubt, refer to rule number1. Pay now, save yourself 31bucks, on it goes...

A tax by another name.

A good owner looks after his dog making sure it doesn't wander, cause problems and is always under control. Yet he is taxed $78 - $109 for absolutely no benefit, yet a bad owner causes all sorts of issues and pays nothing.

Yes I agree something needs to be done about the system. I am a NZ Kennel club member and show dog judge To make our dogs eligble to attend a show and we have a litter, We pay a litter rego fee of $33.00 up to 28 days old After it goes up to $118.00 If we want to show or sell a pup as a show dog an additional cost of $44.00 per pup. Then a fee of $71.00 and an additional fee of $40.00 for the privilige of being a registered kennel. Of which I am and THEN the councils add their charges of which I had to pay $375.00 to keep my dogs which are a small breed and smaller than a cat and are well controlled and adored. Why are the councils so dam money hungry and greedy,

dog registration fees

The council should double the fees. Dogs should only be allowed on rural properties. We have a neighbour who lets their dog roam around, relieving itself on someones lawn & then they leave it whining & barking when they go out.The dog ranger has called at this property a few times.

To me the council members should attend an obedience or dog show to see how much care goes into these dogs. I loathe this time of the year when I have to part with my money to pay same and as far as I am concerned it is my annual donation by force for what! Incidently my NZ Kennel club rego etc is for the life time of the dog. Why cant the councils adapt a similar scheme for the law abiding and good owners. why should we have to subsidise these rotten owners. I emphasise for the owners who are on low incomes and their dog/s are a means of companionship and security what they have to pay can buy a lot of food etc. And to top it off if they are struggling those detested rangers can enter their property and confiscate their loved pet.

me again

Recently there was a case an owner rescued a dog from a bad situation and went to register same with the council age was queried and the dog concerned was estimated to be about 2yrs The receptionist made this law abiding woman pay up from when the dog was 3 mths which I think deplorable and unkind. The woman was only doing was she was thought was the right thing to do. Maybe it is time to register cats, horses, farm animals etc. Come on you ruthless councils spare a thought for us decent owners and do something get into the irresponsible and bad owners ban them from owning dogs and fine them stop taking it out on us respeonsible and attend a dog show etc as I said in one of my earlier messages. A life membership for the dogs would be a good thing.

I am not too worried about the dog registration, I think it is run pretty well. My gripe is B cats and their filthy owners, well some are good, I will give you that, but, as for the rest. Time action was taken to make people keep them in their own back yards, properties, whatever. If dogs can be kept under control because they will wander/roam, etc, so can cats. Are cats filthy, or just their onwers.

You interviewed the wrong type of people on the street the only one that spoke any sense was the blonde lady who said rego should be $25.00 If you interviewed some of the NZ Kennel club or obedience members you would have received a different response. All I can say councils give us responsible owners a fair go and allow us to get some benefits for what we pay than a plastic green tag. I know rego time is difficult for a lot of folk the elderly the low income earner who has a dog/s for security, and companionship. Dogs are wonderful security alarms better than most I think so anyway. Fee reduction would be fantastic. Incidentally I mentioned earlier about showing All exhibits have to be entire and we watch our dogs and they are to valuable to breed with anything.

Dog owner

I am a dog owner. I have a totally fenced yard. I walk my dog on a lead and pick up any faeces it might leave. So all in all I cost the council nothing. I would think a fee of $25 would be fair. Maybe this is time for registered owners rather than dogs.

dog registration

Ive owned a dog for 5yrs. She is a companion and a family memeber. Paying registration each year at the price it is, is a struggle for me in my circumstances, and to alot of others i know too. Especially when you don't receive anything cheaper (vets, vacc). If you dont pay the registration (which money is hard to come by for some these days)you have the worry of getting your dog taken from you. I have lived in tauranga for 2 years, and you don't have many places you can take your dog for walks, so what does the registration pay for? The tag sent to you in post? It would be more acceptable to be cheaper or no fee. My dog costs me enough in vets and surgeries, and good food for a healthy dog.

How dare you judge us responsible and loving owners by your irresponsible neighbours who let their dog/s do as they like How dare you!!! You are obviously antidog How about you attend an obeidience or dog show and judge for yourself how well trained these exhibits are!!!! a lot of us adore our dogs they can be faithful loving and devoted companions if treated right. So I conclude How dare you judge us dog owners by your irresonsible neighbours

kids too

Wrong people interviewed

They shouldnt ask people who dont have dogs, because to them it doesnt matter and they dont think about how stupid registration is. It is a tax for owning a dog essentially, and you get nothing from it. Dog rangers are pretty useless most the time, if your dog is registered and happens to get out of your fenced section or someone lets it out, the micro chip is whats returns the dog to you, not the registration, and being registered doesnt give you discounted pound release fee, and they still wont let you have the dog back on a weekend, there are really no benefits to registered dogs!
