Concreters bailed as worker recovers

Three Tauranga concrete workers accused of the aggravated robbery of Matua Dairy in which a male store attended was hit with a metal bar have been bailed.

Matthew Grant Kingi, 27, Tuhukia-Tysson Mahia, 18, and Shaun Mahia, 18, appeared in Tauranga District Court today charged with one count each of aggravated robbery.

The Matua Dairy was closed for an hour this morning after one its workers was struck with a metal bar during an aggravated robbery overnight.

Police Prosecutor David Pawson says police did not oppose bail.

'There are no grounds to oppose bail on this occasion.”

The trio, two of which are brothers, were arrested by police in Mount Maunganui on Tuesday night following the alleged robbery at the dairy on Levers Road.

Tauranga Police detective sergeant Alan Kingsbury earlier told SunLive two men with hooded tops entered the store on Levers Road about 6.15pm and demanded the store attendant open the cash register.

When the male attendant refused they demanded tobacco before making off with about $50 in goods including cigarettes, phone cards and confectionary.

'A member of the public driving past the store saw two men running from the dairy. They have followed them and witnessed the two men get into a vehicle.”

Detective Kingsbury says the member of the public has then contacted police, who were able to locate and stop the vehicle and arrest the three men in Mount Maunganui. The arrests were made within 10 minutes of the robbery.

Today Matua Dairy operator, who only wished to be known as Jagir, is recovering after being allegedly struck with the metal rod during the robbery overnight.

'Two came in the shop, one stayed in the car,” says Jagir today.

'He had a big metal rod,” he says indicating something about one metre long.

When Jagir refused to open the cash register, he says one of the two men struck him with the bar before running from the store.

The popular dairy was closed for the night and re-opened about 9am today.

For Jagir it was a long night. After the robbery he was interviewed by detectives and didn't return home until 11.30pm.

When he opened the shop today, he explained his boss would be minding the store today while he took the day off to rest up.

The recordings from the dairy's video cameras were given to police and the tobacco taken in the alleged robbery was able to be recovered by police.

All three live locally and work as concrete workers, say police. They are due to reappear in court on June 6.

Bail laws stupid?

I'm amazed that you can be accused of a serious crime and get bail. If accusation of a robbery involving violence isn't serious I'm gobsmacked? What a pathetic justice system we have.
