Slip danger still evident

A section of State Highway 36, between Tauranga and Rotorua, remains under manned single lane traffic control following a major slip on April 17.

About 300m of rain fell in the Mangorewa Gorge causing a large slip to come down and wash out barriers on the side of the road. Read more here.

The risk of mudslides remains on SH36, between Dudley Road and Te Matai Road.

Geotechnical options are being considered to remove unstable material over the coming weeks with the aim of trying to open the road to two lanes.

Until the road is fully open, the NZ Transport Agency warns motorists to drive with caution in the area.
