A Bayfair resident woke to hear banging and crashing coming from the Girven Road Micromart about 1.10am.

Tauranga Police Acting Senior Sergeant Cameron Anderson says the neighbour phoned police who arrived on scene within 15 minutes to find two men driving away.

A short chase ensued to Matapihi where the pair abandoned the car and attempted to flee on foot.

The police dog team were called in and found the pair about an hour later.

Police arrested and charged two men - a 33-year-old and 21-year-old. One is facing charges of burglary and the other failing to stop, driving while disqualified and burglary.

At the micromart this morning, owner Harjit Singh is still counting the loss to his store.

'It's very disappointing,” Harjit told SunLive.

'I am concerned that they might come back soon.”

From the stock counted so far, Harjit says it appears the burglars took a substantial amount of beer, along with pies, butter and milk.

Harjit was informed of the burglary by police and arrived at the store about 2am to find the back storeroom smashed and holes to the store front windows.

By the look of the damage, he believes the burglars backed their vehicle up to the back storeroom and smashed a window to gain entry.

'There were broken beer bottles on the driveway.”

Attempts were made to gain access to the store through the front window.

The storeroom wall was smashed in allowing entry to the main shop, where the alleged burglars took items, before fleeing in what police say is one of the men's own vehicles.

The back storeroom was not alarmed, says Harjit as deliveries are made throughout the early hours.

But the rest of the store was, and security cameras managed to capture images of the back of two men, he says.

Harjit has owned the store in a partnership for the last six years and has experienced burglaries in the past where cigarettes were taken.

The Girven Road Micromart is open for business today.
