Eastern Anzac special

A bumper day of rugby is scheduled this Anzac Day with four Eastern Bay division one teams all playing each other at Whakatane's Rugby Park.

In one of two days all four teams play each other at the same venue games will kick off at 2.30pm with the Steamers coach Kevin Schuler and assistant coach Rodney Gibbs attending the derby to observe up and coming talent.

Poroporo looks to hold on to ball against Rangiuru in last year's Eastern Bay division one final.

The two game special sees Whakatane Marist take on Te Teko on No. 1 field while Poroporo face Paroa next door on the No. 2 field. The second dual day is on May 17 once again at Whakatane.

Poroporo senior coach Waata Heathcote says the side is comfortably building into the season after last year's loss to Rangiruru in the final, counting as a promotion game to the Bayfair Baywide Premier Rugby competition.

'In terms of where we're at with our development at the moment, we've inherited nine new guys to our squad,” says Heathcote.

'Losing last year's final we know where we need to be at now that the team has experienced that. We're looking extremely promising.”

Te Teko senior coach Michael Pryor admits this year is a whole new experience having made the step up from assistant to head coach from last season.

'We have lots of young players coming through which makes my game plan a lot faster,” says Michael.

'We're a very young team this year with only a few older experienced guys which has added a bit of steam to our team.”
