Gisborne shooting victim named

The 39-year-old man fatally shot at a Gisborne home at the weekend is Douglas Deb Den Witeri.

Police today released the name of the man who died in Gisborne Hospital overnight after he was shot at his Elgin home in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The 42-year-old man charged with assault in relation to the shooting was granted name suppression in Gisborne District Court this morning.

He is remanded in custody until Thursday where police say a more appropriate charge will be laid.

Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Scott said earlier that at approximately 2.40am on Sunday a man entered the Te Hapara home and made demands before shooting one of the occupants. He then fled the scene in a vehicle.

'We believe this man is known to the two people who were at the address.”

The firearm used in the shooting is still outstanding and police would still like to hear from anyone who has information in relation to this or the shooting to please contact the Gisborne Police station.

The victim was taken by ambulance to hospital where he died on Sunday night.

Police and forensic teams are today at the property as part of what police say is now a homicide investigation.

A post-mortem will be held in Wellington this afternoon.

Information can also be provided anonymously to the organisation Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
