Graham Frith, aka Grum, met with SunLive yesterday and says the reason for his mission is to create awareness of prostate cancer. He is working in conjunction with Prostate Cancer Foundation of New Zealand and hopes to host town meetings across the world giving people information about the disease.

Grum left for his cycle adventure across the North Island from Hanmer Springs on May 29. He is travelling the North Island on his new Surley Karate Monkey Bike built for him by one of his friends.

Grum says his cycle will take about six weeks and is only a warm up route before his venture across the world, which he says will take more than two years.

'That's the dream route.”

Every adventure is a dream and everyone has a dream, he says.

'This one is just one of many and it has been for a long time to join the dots and go places that I haven't seen, see places and see the world.

'Every person needs an adventure. Every person has a dream. But sometimes you've just got to get out and do those adventures and dreams. Follow the dream.”

The world map shows the potential route Grum plans to take. This is subject to change depending on conditions, political reasons and weather.

Grum has worked in the outdoor pursuits industry since 1986, and loves to challenge himself.

He has travelled to Tibet before cycling over hilly terrain so he knows what he is up against.

'Big hills are just one rotation of the pedals at a time in granny gear.”

The Lions Foundation has proposed to host the trip and Grum will stay in every Lions Club across the country. He will pitch a tent in the towns which don't accommodate a Lions Club.

Grum returns back to Hanmer Springs on July 7. He has two more warm up routes to cover, including a cycle along Australia's South and West Coast and a trip around South East Asia, before he takes on the rest of the world.
